FNPA Comments on Recent Case Highlighting the Need for Naturopathic Licensure in Florida

February 26, 2016 – The recent high profile case of a South Florida teenager accused of practicing medicine without a license highlights an important and growing problem in our state. While authorities indicate this teenager was acting more like an M.D. than anything else, he seems to have benefitted from the ambiguity surrounding natural, holistic, and naturopathic medicine. The Florida Naturopathic Physicians Association (FNPA) believes this ambiguity is encouraged by Florida’s current lack of naturopathic licensure, which puts citizens here at risk.

Healthcare consumers increasingly seek medical professionals who offer natural, holistic, and integrative solutions to their health concerns. Naturopathic doctors (NDs) are clinically trained in the safe, effective use of diet, exercise, vitamins, and botanical medicines, including the important areas of drug-herb and drug-nutrient interactions. Properly trained NDs have graduated from an accredited, 4-year, graduate-level naturopathic medical program and have passed national naturopathic licensing examinations. Such NDs work in partnership with other licensed medical providers for the betterment of overall patient care.

Unfortunately, without active naturopathic licensure in Florida, people with certificates from unaccredited online diploma mills – or with no training at all – can easily represent themselves as naturopathic doctors. It is currently very difficult for healthcare consumers and professionals alike to quickly and easily identify legitimate NDs from untrained individuals.

The FNPA feels it is time for the State of Florida to once again issue licenses to naturopathic doctors, just like the 20 other US jurisdictions that already do. Proper oversight and regulation of naturopathic doctors will benefit Florida’s healthcare consumers, ensuring they have access to safe practitioners who are properly trained on the use of the natural and integrative therapies they seek.
