The FNPA is working to pass legislation that will allow qualified Naturopathic Doctors to practice primary healthcare in the state of Florida. Even though Naturopthic Doctors have had licenses to practice medicine in Florida since the 1920s, the state hasn’t issued new licenses in several years.
WHAT DOES LICENSURE DO FOR YOU?
Licensure allows Naturopathic Doctors with the proper credentials to practice this safe and effective health care as primary care doctors.
Licensure sets requirements for the education and training of those individuals who call themselves Naturopathic Doctors.
Licensure increases public safety by regulating who can refer to themselves as a Naturopath or Naturopathic Physician. This helps keep untrained individuals from calling themselves Naturopathic Doctors.
Licensure gives Floridans access to Naturopathic Treatments that cost substantially less than conventional medicine, saving Floridans millions of dollars a year by preventing common debilitating diseases.
Licensure in Florida has been available since the early 1900’s, but no longer has an acting board to give new licenses. There are only 5 remaining licensed Naturopathic Physicians. We must pass new legislation in order to meet the growing demand for safe, natural health care.

INTENT OF LEGISLATION
The Florida Naturopathic Physicians Association is committed to ensuring that Florida residents have the freedom to access natural health care and the broad array of alternative therapies available. Our goal is to build awareness of the efficacy of natural medicine and the positive results our patients experience. Naturopathic doctors are specialists in natural medicine who work closely with their patients to establish long-term health. Naturopathic doctors (NDs) use familiar, conventional diagnostic techniques and treat illness using traditional therapies and by supporting the body’s innate healing abilities. We are working diligently, with our alliance of consumers and providers, to transform the future health of our Florida residents. Together, we seek to safely improve access by licensing trained, naturopathic physicians in the state of Florida.
The intent of our legislative effort is to expand access to natural medicine by licensing naturopathic physicians to diagnose and treat under a defined scope of practice.
It is not the intent of the FNPA to restrict practitioners of natural health modalities from practicing now or in the future.
It is not the intent of the FNPA to restrict the use of natural therapies to naturopathic physicians. We recognize that many of the therapies used by naturopathic physicians, including nutritional supplements, herbs, and such physical forces as heat, cold, water, touch, and light, are not the exclusive privilege of naturopathic physicians. We do not support prohibiting or restricting their use to licensed naturopathic physicians.
It is not the intent of the FNPA to restrict the sale of natural products to naturopathic physicians. We recognize that many of the natural products used by naturopathic physicians, including nutritional supplements and herbs, are not the exclusive privilege of naturopathic physicians. We do not support prohibiting or restricting the sale of natural products to licensed naturopathic physicians.
It is not the intent of the FNPA to restrict the use of homeopathy to naturopathic physicians. The only restriction we promote would apply to those who identify themselves as naturopathic doctors, whom we believe must have a license in order to identify themselves as naturopathic doctors, and as such, also be eligible to prescribe a homeopathic remedy or any other natural therapy.
It is not the intent of the FNPA to expand a ND’s scope of practice beyond his or her training. Naturopathic physicians receive a Doctorate of Naturopathic Medicine from federally accredited schools; they are not Doctors of Chiropractic, Osteopathy or Medicine, nor do they practice as such.
We do intend to protect the public from untrained practitioners who promote themselves as doctors or physicians, but have obtained their credentials from diploma mills. We do intend to protect the public from people who treat and diagnose with little or no clinical training.
